This castle is strategically  set on a rocky
height overlooking the Moyra Pass perhaps better known as The Gap of the
North. This was a much used route since earliest times, it was known as
'Slighe Miodhluachra' and ran from Drogheda through the pass to
Dunseverick in
County Antrim.
The castle was built in 1601 during
Lord Mountjoy's campaign of suppression
in Ulster.
The tower is three storeys high, with
rounded corners, gun loops and a machicolation over the door. There are
no staircases the upper floors must have been accessed with ladders.
Little remains of the original surrounding
bawn.
